Instagram hashtags in 2026: the 5-hashtag limit and how to use them
Instagram now limits posts and Reels to five hashtags, a change announced in December 2025 and rolled out gradually. Hashtags still help Instagram understand what your content is about, but they’re a small factor in reach compared with watch time, likes and sends. Use three to five specific, relevant hashtags, put the words people search for in your caption and on-screen text, and never use hashtags that don’t describe the post.
The 5-hashtag limit
Instagram announced in December 2025 that posts and Reels would be limited to five hashtags, rolling out to accounts gradually (Social Media Today). The old advice to use 20 or 30 hashtags no longer applies.
Other Meta apps have similar guidance: Meta suggests no more than five hashtags on Facebook too, and Threads allows one topic tag per post.
What hashtags do now
- Help Instagram categorise your content, alongside your caption, on-screen text and audio.
- Let people follow or search a topic and find your post.
- Don’t drive much reach on their own. Instagram’s top ranking signals are watch time, likes and sends (how to grow on Instagram).
How to choose your five
- One niche-defining hashtag that describes your account’s topic (#plantbasedrecipes).
- One or two content hashtags that describe this specific post (#highproteinbreakfast).
- One audience or location hashtag where it’s relevant (#londonfoodie).
- Optional: one community or branded hashtag you or a community use regularly.
Pick specific over generic: #oilyskincare tells Instagram far more than #beauty, and you’re competing with fewer posts.
Keywords now matter more than hashtags
Instagram works more like a search engine than it used to. Help it (and searchers) understand your content:
- Caption: use the words people would search, naturally, in the first line.
- On-screen text: a short title on your Reel’s first frame.
- Profile name field: add your niche keyword (“Sam | Budget Travel Tips”).
- Alt text for photos, describing what’s in them.
Hashtag mistakes to avoid
- Irrelevant trending hashtags. They show your post to the wrong people, who scroll past.
- The same five on every post. Match hashtags to each post.
- Hashtags in comments to dodge the limit. Keep them in the caption.
- Burying #ad. On paid, gifted or affiliate posts, put “Ad” or #ad at the start of the caption, not among your hashtags at the end, and use Instagram’s paid partnership label where it applies. See how to disclose sponsored posts.
- Banned or spammy hashtags. Check a hashtag’s results before using it: if they look spammy, skip it.
Frequently asked questions
How many hashtags can you use on Instagram in 2026?
Up to five per post or Reel. Instagram introduced the limit in December 2025 and rolled it out gradually.
Do hashtags still work on Instagram?
They help Instagram categorise your content and let people find it by topic, but they’re a small factor in reach compared with watch time, likes and sends.
Should I put hashtags in the caption or comments?
In the caption. Keep them relevant and specific, and put your main keywords in the caption text too.
What are the best hashtags for Instagram growth?
Specific ones that describe your niche and the individual post, plus a location or audience tag where relevant. There’s no universal list: the best hashtags are the ones your ideal followers actually follow and search.
